Garry E. Towne, 77, of Boylston, formerly of Weedsport, died May 2, 2013 at Upstate-University Hospital. He was born Jan. 14, 1936 in Utica, NY to William and Verna Backus Towne.

He graduated high school from Oriskany Central School, obtained his bachelor’s degree from Utica College of Syracuse University and his master’s degree from Syracuse University. He married Dawn Scouten in 1961.

An internationally known Basset Hound Breeder and proprietor of Von Skauton Kennels in Weedsport, NY for 48 years. He was in management for Seal Wright Co. for 5 years, then taught for 23 years retiring from West Genesee Central in 1983 in order to expand his growing business. Garry retired to the Tug Hill near Sandy Creek – Lacona in 2010.

He was an avid sailor on Lake Ontario and held a Captain’s License. He was a life member and past treasurer of the Onondaga Kennel Association, Member of the Basset Hound Club of America and Susquehanna Basset Hound Club, and Member and chairperson of the Town of Brutus Zoning Board of Appeals for several years.

As a youth Garry became interested in race cars and rode with Chuck Mahoney, a well known dirt track racer of the time. In later years he spent time as Pit crew chief for Craig “Cricket” Keel.

Garry worked his way through college, rising from dishwasher to chef at Trinkaus Manor. He also worked on the St. Lawrence Sea Way. He enjoyed carpentry, built a row boat in high school and later acted as his own contractor for both his first and second homes. He was an avid round dancer.

Survived by his wife, Dawn, 2 brothers, Wayne (Marie) Towne, Paul (Sue) Towne, a sister, Anne Smith, a brother-in-law, Roger Waterman, sister-in-laws, Betty Watson and Diana Hilts, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by a brother Edwin Watson, a sister, Linda Waterman and brother-in-law Fran Smith.

Funeral services 2PM Saturday at Summerville Funeral Home with Rev. Mary Drake officiating, Friends may call Friday 6-8 PM at the funeral home, 1997 Harwood Dr. Sandy Creek, NY.
