CROGHAN, NY ~ Duane M. Hoch, 72, of 7402 Old State Rd., Croghan, died peacefully on Monday, May 7, 2013, at his home, under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

Duane was born in Lowville, NY, on July 25, 1940, a son of Richard F. and Eleanor Osborne Hoch, and was educated at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.

He married Ethel M. Aucter on May 21, 1966, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, with the Rev. Anthony Moore, OFM, officiating.

Duane worked on his family’s farm until the death of his father, and in the late 1960’s, went to work for the Croghan and Gouverneur Stone Quarries until late 1980’s, and then ran his family’s farm. When he retired from farming in 1994, he became self-employed woodsman, working up until the time of his illness for various area farmers cutting pulp and firewood.

He was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan. He was a member of the Peeler Swamp and Brantingham Hunting Clubs, and was an honorary member of the Mason Jar Hunting Club.

Throughout his life, he was a very avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed spending time and working at his family camp and sugarbush. He particularly liked going to auctions and spending time tinkering with and fixing just about anything.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of almost 47 years, Ethel; three sons and daughters-in-law, Duane R. “Poncho” and Tracy Hoch, of Castorland, Michael J. and Kimberly Hoch, David A. and Lory Hoch, all of Croghan; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene M. and Brian Forney, of Croghan; 12 grandchildren, Jamie, Brittany, Miranda, Hali, Ashliegh, Tyler, Caleb, Ryan, Lane and Macey Hoch, and Dain and Jordain Forney; 3 great grandchildren, Hunter, Hayden, and Dalton; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Christine Hoch, of Croghan; a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Randy Lyndaker, of Castorland, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Ronald and Bruce Hoch.

Duane’s funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7, 2013, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home.
