Three candidates are vying for one open seat on the Watertown City School District Board of Education.

The budget vote and election are noon to 9 p.m. May 21 at Watertown High School and North Elementary School.

Board candidates are:

Bridgette R. Gates

Age: 38

Occupation: Director of operations for the Youth and Children’s Program at the Watertown YMCA.

Academics: Bachelor’s degree in education from SUNY Cortland, 1997, with a background in English.

Family: She is married to Rick J. Gates and has two children: Hannah M., 10, and Hayden M., 8.

Previous board experience: Jefferson Community College Early Childhood Advisory, 2013.

“I have a desire to be more involved,” Mrs. Gates said. “I have an invested interest in how the school district runs.”

Jeremy M. Marshall

Age: 34

Occupation: Department of Veterans Affairs readjustment counseling technician.

Academics: Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in management from American Military University, 2013. Working on a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Illinois, Springfield.

Family: He is married to Emily M. Marshall and has two children: Chase J.M., 8, and Kaytlin M., 11.

Previous Board Experience: None.

“I like staying involved in the community, but my wife’s involved in the school and my kids go to the school,” he said.

His wife is secretary to Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Jason R. Ring. Chase attends Knickerbocker Elementary School and Kaytlin attends H.T. Wiley Intermediate School.

Mr. Marshall also serves as a coach for the younger students’ wrestling team in the district.

“It makes you develop a bond with these kids,” he said. “Somebody’s got to look out for the kids.”

Beth A. Linderman

Age: 55

Occupation: Clinical social worker.

Academics: Bachelor’s degree in social work from Cornell University, 1979; master’s degree in social work from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service, 1983.

Family: She is married to Robert O. Kimball and has two children: Charles K. Kimball, 29, and Katharine E. Kimball, 25. She also has two grandchildren: Lillian K. Kimball, 7, and Maxwell R. Kimball, 2.

Previous Board Experience: Watertown Family YMCA board member since 2009, secretary since 2011; Watertown Noon Rotary board of directors since 2012; served on the board of Family Counseling Service of Northern New York; served on Cornell Cooperative Extension board of directors in the 1990s; served on the Session at First Presbyterian Church.

“There are currently a number of critical issues facing our educational system,” Ms. Linderman said. “How we respond as a school district now will impact our community well into the future. As a mental health professional, the parent of two WHS graduates and the grandparent of a current student, I believe I have something to contribute to the conversation.”

Board President Michael R. Flick is not running for re-election
