College baseball: Alteri recovering from seizures

It’s been a rough few months for former Immaculate Heart Central baseball standout Santino Alteri.

A freshman at Division II Mt. Olive College (North Carolina), Alteri tore the labrum in his left hip in January. That’s the same injury that has sidelined New York Yankees’ slugger Alex Rodriguez.

Doctors didn’t realize the injury until March, and Alteri had surgery at Duke University three weeks ago. However, there were post-operative complications, according to his father, Paul Alteri. “He suffered seizures and at one point went unconscious,’’ Paul said. “He was rushed to the hospital. That’s when I was called down there.’’

When Paul arrived, Santino was taken off all the drugs. After days in the hospital, the seizures stopped, and no more damage was done to the hip, so he was released.

Doctors believe the anesthesia caused his seizures, Paul reported. “He’s got a long recovery ahead of him, but he’s ready for the challenge. He’s on crutches for six weeks before he’s allowed to put any weight on his leg. He’ll be home this week.’’

Alteri was a Times first-team All-North performer the past two seasons.
