POTSDAM - SLC Arts Council is excited to announce the first annual Community Gallery Project Art Walk on May 10 in the villages of Canton and Potsdam. Starting at 4 p.m. in Canton and 5 p.m. in Potsdam, Community Gallery Project businesses will be hosting artist receptions for the entire community.

Musicians from the Ives Park Music Family Festival will be joining the Art Walk festivities by playing at a few locations. With the involvement of over 20 local artists, SLC Arts promotes its mission to support Local Art for Local People.

The SLC Arts Community Gallery Project is a simple idea to turn the walls of area businesses, public buildings, and restaurants into galleries. In turn, increased visibility will promote the work of student artists and regional artists and the establishments that feature this artwork. “This is a fabulous opportunity to celebrate the work of area artists in surprising places. We are thrilled to see so many people involved in building community through the arts,” said SLC Arts Council Executive Director, Rebekah Wilkins-Pepiton.

The project was made possible by the dedication of St. Lawrence University student Allison Hall, who worked closely with SLC Arts in developing the project and developing relationships with Canton business. Additionally, SUNY Potsdam students Chris Beebe, Allison Applegate and Anthony Powers helped organize Potsdam business involvement. The scope of the project required the dedication of people from the entire area.

Artwork will be featured at the following Canton businesses: Spicy Iguana, Nature’s Storehouse, Josie’s Little Pizzeria, The Club, and the St. Lawrence University ODY Library. In Potsdam the following businesses are hosting artists: The Alchemistress, Aerus, Josie’s Pizzeria II, Wear on Earth, Creative Spirit, Maple Run Emporium, SLC Arts Gallery, Harris Medical, Northern Interiors, First Crush Bistro, Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, Potsdam IGA, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, and Plumley Real Estate. Simply look for the bright yellow “Community Gallery Project” sign.
