Town of LeRay Highway Department workers repaired four fire hydrants in the past week to curtail leaks in Water District 2, which encompasses the commercial district along routes 11 and 342. The repairs came after officials discovered this month the district had leaked about 5 million gallons, an average of 55,000 gallons a day, during the first quarter this year.

“Our daily flows appear to be returning to normal, and by all appearances the problem is fixed,” said Steven T. Harter, the town supervisor’s administrative clerk. He said two leaks were fixed on Route 11, north of the intersection of Route 781, on April 19. The remaining two leaks, found along Route 342, were repaired Monday.

Based on the amount residents are charged in the district — $3.75 per 1,000 gallons — the town lost about $18,750 worth of water in the past three months, about $208 per day.
