POTSDAM Village police have warned residents to be on the lookout for bears after the state Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed evidence of black bear droppings at a Leroy Street home.
This time of year, bears are looking for food and often will enter a populated area in their search, police said.
Black bears will take advantage of almost any readily available food source, including bird feeders and garbage.
People should never intentionally feed bears and should take every precaution to discourage bears from seeking out food sources in neighborhoods and other residential areas, police said.
Typically, black bears are timid and will avoid all contact with humans, but the animals can be a nuisance and cause significant damage if they believe they can obtain an easy meal.
