ALEXANDRIA BAY — The local school district is saving three teaching positions.

In the process, however, midday preschool transportation and late runs for athletes were taken out of the budget at Alexandria Central School District’s Board of Education meeting Tuesday.

Five positions were originally on the chopping block, according to Superintendent Robert B. Wagoner Jr., when the $11,635,213 spending plan for 2013-14 was approved at the board’s April 1 meeting.

“This will allow us to save around $60,000 minimum and allow us to save teaching positions,” he said.

According to Mr. Wagoner, six of the seven board members were at the meeting. They unanimously approved the decision.

The budget will remain the same amount, but money will be reallocated to personnel. Next year’s spending plan is a $359,742 increase, nearly 3.2 percent, from this year’s $11,275,471. The tax levy will increase 4 percent.

No midday transportation means children in the morning class will have to be picked up by parents and children in the afternoon class will have to be dropped off.

Mr. Wagoner confirmed the two positions being cut from the budget are teaching positions. However, he did not reveal what positions they were.

“Until the budget passes (in May), I’d have to say no,” he said.

In other business, high school earth science and agriculture teacher Richard Campany was awarded the Ideas Unlimited Award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators. He submitted a marble maze for the contest.
