The March 2013 unemployment rate in Lewis County jumped slightly, but Jefferson and St. Lawrence rates were lower compared with March 2012, the state Department of Labor announced Tuesday.

In contrast with March 2012, Lewis County’s rate increased from 12 to 12.3 percent, Jefferson County dropped from 11.6 to 11.5 percent and St. Lawrence County decreased from 11.3 to 10.8 percent.

March figures sank in all three counties compared with February: Jefferson from 12.2 to 11.5 percent, Lewis from 13.2 to 12.3 percent and St. Lawrence from 11.4 to 10.8 percent.

In upstate New York’s 52-county region, the March jobless rate dipped from 8.8 to 8.4 percent compared with March 2012. Statewide the rate dropped from 8.7 to 8.1 percent over the period, and the nationwide rate sank from 8.4 to 7.6 percent.
