CARTHAGE A blaze that erupted Monday night in large exhaust vents used for drying paper products at Climax Manufacturing Co., 30 Champion St., was contained by six volunteer fire departments with minimal damage. No one was injured.
Jefferson County emergency dispatch was notified of the blaze at 9:04 p.m., and the West Carthage Volunteer Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter. Flames were present above the exhaust vents at the plant when firefighters arrived, and firefighters contained it within 30 minutes, said Joseph D. Plummer, Jefferson County Director of Fire and Emergency Management.
Though the six large exhaust vents are interconnected, Mr. Plummer said, the fire was present only in the first two vents and was stopped before it advanced further.
Mr. Plummer said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
We have no idea yet, but assume its something from the manufacturing process, he said.
Also providing assistance at the scene were the Carthage, Fort Drum, Rutland, Champion and Castorland fire departments and the Carthage Area Rescue Squad.
