NEW BOSTON A vacant farmhouse was destroyed by a Monday afternoon grass fire covering roughly one acre.
Lowville firefighters were called to a grass fire at Van Dressen and Boshart roads in the town of Harrisburg and requested mutual aid from Copenhagen and Martinsburg fire departments.
Because of the windy conditions, the blaze spread to an old Boshart Road farmhouse, which was considered a total loss, according to Lewis County Fire Coordinator James M. Martin.
Mr. Martin said the building was fully engulfed upon his arrival at the scene.
Officials were attempting to determine the owner, who is not a local resident, he said.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
Lewis County Search and Rescue and state environmental conservation officers assisted at the scene.
