The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has launched a study in collaboration with researchers from Cornell University, Ithaca, to evaluate two methods to enhance fresh vegetable production in Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton and Essex counties.

The study will test levels of nutrients in vegetable crops using two methods. One method will test nutrient levels throughout the growing season, while the other, fertigation, will test the delivery of vital nutrients to crops via drip-irrigation systems. Research has shown growers who use preseason soil testing, coupled with measuring nutrients in plant-leaf tissue, throughout the growing season are more likely to correct deficiencies before crops are harmed.
