Karen D. Romeo, 51, Sackets Harbor, was charged by state police at 12:25 p.m. Thursday at 21800 Towne Center Drive with first-degree operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, reckless driving, speeding and unsafe lane change.

Ms. Romeo is the advertising manager for the Watertown Daily Times.

“Karen has had a recent health issue and experienced a severe reaction to her medication,” said Robert D. Gorman, managing editor of the Times. “Fortunately, no one was injured.”

State police said Ms. Romeo’s vehicle struck two unoccupied parked vehicles while backing out of a parking spot at the Walmart Supercenter, Route 3, about noon Thursday. She failed to stop at two stop signs in the parking lot and was observed failing to yield to oncoming traffic, police said.

A trooper stopped Ms. Romeo across the street in the Target parking lot at Towne Center plaza after her vehicle struck another car and other unidentified objects, state police said.

Surveillance video showed that she left the first parking lot without notifying the vehicles’ owners, police said.

She was given an appearance ticket for Watertown Town Court.
