Where are our legislators?
The north countrys school districts are in trouble. There are not enough funds to provide the educational programs needed for our childrens future. Its even doubtful that a bare-bones curriculum will be sufficient to provide access to quality higher education and good employment. It takes more than a bare-bones, basic curriculum to compete in todays job market. Now communities are faced with very difficult realities. Our children are going to lose out.
Where were you parents, grandparents, concerned citizens when you voted for the Republican agenda? Republicans from the north country were more interested in the balanced budget than supporting public education. Having a balanced budget at the expense of our childrens education is cruel.
When the millionaires tax was proposed a few years back, no Republican from the north country supported it. Our north country Republican legislators and the majority of their party members did not support having the rich pay a fairer share of the budget. If the millionaires tax had been put into place when first discussed, our school districts would be in less financial crisis than they find themselves in now.
Now, the governor and his Republican cronies are willing to place a small tax on the ultra-rich. Unfortunately its too little too late. Once again the ordinary citizen is left to bear the financial burden of cleaning up the mess left by those who are suppose to have our best interest in mind our legislators as well as boards of education. People who are just making a living and getting by are left with the consequences of misguided legislators, greedy corporate executives and school boards and superintendents who made poor decisions. And in the meantime our children and their future are to suffer.
All of us face the result of the Republicans and the governors strangulation of public education in the north country. After all, someone once said: Knowledge is power. Without it we become servants and serfs.
