Massena Central recovered from a season-opening loss with a convincing 21-1 Central Division win over Potsdam Central while Parishville-Hopkinton opened the East Division season with a double-header sweep over St. Regis Falls on Wednesday.
Massena 21, Potsdam 1 (5 innings): In Potsdam, the Lady Raiders took early control with a 10-run outburst in their first at-bat as freshman Kaylynn Conto picked up the win in her varsity pitching debut. Conto fanned six and walked nine while limiting the Lady Sandstoners to a pair of hits while Jordan Emerson went the distance in taking the loss.
Mackenzie Young led the way offensively for Massena going 3-3 with a double and four runs scored. Bailey Dillabough went 2-4 with a double and four runs scored while Chelsea Streeter doubled and came around to score twice.
Kelsey Green singled and logged the lone RBI for the Lady Sandstoners by drawing a bases-loaded walk to force home Jessica Murray with the only run. Amy Arno doubled to account for the other Potsdam hit.
The Lady Raiders return to action Monday on the road against Gouverneur while the Lady Sandstoners (0-2) are slated to play at Gouverneur this afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m.
P-H 9-10, SRF 2-0: At the Firemens Field in Parishville, the Lady Panthers made the most of their hits in both games and got a pair of strong outings from sophomore hurler Nicole White in posting a season—opening sweep over the Lady Saints.
Im very happy with this start, noted first-year coach Justin Storie, who has taken over the P-H softball helm from former longtime mentor Evan Harper, who retired at the end of last season.
They have a very strong softball program here because of coach Harper and Im hoping to take what hes done and build from it, Storie added.
In the opening game against SRF, the Lady Panthers struck for three runs in the first inning then countered a two-run rally by the Lady Saints in the top of the third with back-to-back three-run surges in the third and fourth innings. White fanned six and walked three for the complete-game win. Brooke Haverstock had one strikeout and six walks in taking the loss.
White aided her cause offensively going 1-3 with three runs scored. Marlee Wilson and Monica Votra both singled and scored a run while Marissa Paradis singled.
Brittany Rondeau was 2-3 with two triples, an RBI and run scored in the losing effort. Macy Fraser singled and scored the other run.
The nightcap saw White toss a one-hitter for her second win of the day as she struck out six and walked three while limiting the Lady Saints to a fourth-inning single by Hana Northrup.
Kodi Perkins anchored the P-H offense going 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI as the Lady Panthers built a 4-0 lead through the first two innings then doubled it in the third with a four-run surge. White had another strong outing at the plate going 2-3 with two runs scored. Alison Parker came around to score a pair of runs while Makenzie Reif drew a pair of walks and scored a solo run.
The Lady Panthers are slated to host Tupper Lake on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
In the NAC West Division games played on Wednesday, Heuvelton beat Lisbon 11-2, Hammond stopped Morristown 8-3, Clifton-Fine edged Hermon-DeKalb 5-4 and Edwards-Knox outlasted Harrisville 13-11. A non-league game saw Watertown drop Gouverneur 19-9.
