Rain, rain, go away.

Local sports teams want to play.

The Frontier League boys tennis season starts this week, despite a slow start to the spring sports campaign. Players have had few opportunities to practice outside due to cold, wet weather, and the first tennis matches on Tuesday were postponed due to rain.

The league features six teams and no coaching changes from last year.

Alexandria, which went undefeated and captured the Section 3 Class C-2 title last season, will have to adjust to several changes to its roster, however.

The Purple Ghosts lost four out of their top seven players to graduation, including all three singles players (Shawn Martin, Elliot Dunn and Riley Thomson). Martin and Dunn were league tournament champions at first and second singles, respectively. Alexandria returns Ryan Cullen and Ryan Charlebois, who played first doubles last season.

Watertown, which captured the league tournament title last year, welcomes back first singles player David Zabriskie. He has been playing on the varsity team since he was in seventh grade and could emerge as the top player in the league.

The Cyclones also lost several key members to graduation, including second and third singles players Mark Taylor and George Bonisteel. Coach Brian Morrison’s team will rely on Eric Gibbs and Chris Patterson for added strength.

Sam Purcell will play first singles for Immaculate Heart Central for the second season, and sophomore Erick Torres returns to fill the top spot for the third year at Indian River.

Carthage, which graduated 11 of 15 from last season’s roster, has no returning players. The Comets will be led at first and second singles by Sam Kim and Jacob Zehr. Expected to play doubles are Andrew Benson and Gabe Acosta, and Patrick Farley and Steve Ong.

Greg Panowicz is back to play first singles for Lowville. Collin Stewart, who played second singles last year, has a broken thumb and may be out for the season. Lowville coach Jim Rhodes says he’s hoping Stewart will be cleared to play by the second week of matches.
