CHAUMONT — The village government is cutting back on general spending to keep its tax rate steady in the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Chaumont’s general spending will decrease by 5.6 percent to $310,175 from $328,600 this fiscal year.

The tax levy, or the amount to be raised through property taxes, will go up 6.4 percent — to $120,250 from $113,000 this year — but the tax rate will remain the same at $9.52 per $1,000 of assessed value, due to a slight bump in Chaumont’s tax base.

The levy increase is still under the state-mandated “tax cap.” Under the village’s tax cap calculations, Chaumont could have raised the levy by up to 7.8 percent in the 2013-14 fiscal year without requiring a board resolution to override it.

Chaumont’s tax base, or the total assessed value of all taxable property in the village, is estimated to be $12.6 million, up from roughly $11.8 million this year.

Chaumont will not take any money out of its unappropriated general fund reserve to balance its 2013-14 budget. The village didn’t use any of its “rainy day funds” in the 2012-13 fiscal year either.

The total budget, including water and sewer district funds, will be $646,850 — up 0.8 percent from $641,520 this fiscal year.

Chaumont is expecting $11,600 more in sales tax revenue next year.

Salaries for the mayor and village trustees will remain $5,000 and $1,750, respectively.
