Samaritan Health System needs more nurses.
Throughout the organizations main hospital, nursing home and newly opened nursing home/assisted-living facility, there is a need for certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, unit clerks and registered nurses.
You always have turnover, so theres always a need, said Michael D. Britt, Samaritans manager of recruiting. The balance today is in facilities making use of newly graduated registered nurses. Youre going to have baby boomers in the midst of retiring.
This is a trend at health care facilities throughout the nation.
Another difficulty, Mr. Britt said, is recruitment of experienced registered nurses. They often dont want to uproot their families, or theyve become firmly established at their current place of employment.
Mr. Britt said Samaritan Medical Center, Samaritan Summit Village, Samaritan Keep Home and Samaritans community health centers could use both experienced and new nurses and nursing assistants.
Recruitment efforts include an open house from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in conference rooms 2A and 2B of the hospital, 830 Washington St.
Mr. Britt said a group of managers, chief nursing staff, human resources representatives and educators will be on hand to answer any questions attendees may have.
He said he attended a career fair last week at Jefferson Community College, during which he told JCC nursing students to bring their friends to the nursing open house because people may become interested in switching careers.
In past years, Mr. Britt said, nursing open houses have been very successful in recruiting registered nurses, while recruitment of certified nursing assistants continues to be a struggle.
The CNA role can be very rewarding, but physically demanding, he said. (Recruiting for) LPNs has not been as difficult, I think, in part because the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services does a very good job with its class.
If people cannot attend the open house, they can find more information about job opportunities on Samaritans website, www.samaritanhealth.com.
