SYRACUSE The Syracuse University mens lacrosse team is living on the edge these days.
The Orange generated yet another comeback as Derek Maltz scored with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to lift SU past Rutgers, 12-11, on Saturday in a Big East game at the Carrier Dome.
The Scarlet Knights nearly spoiled SUs Senior Day, but the Orange (9-2, 3-1), ranked seventh and eighth nationally, rallied for the third consecutive game to prevail against Rutgers (2-11, 0-5).
Senior midfielders Luke Cometti and JoJo Marasco combined for 13 points. Cometti tallied a career-high six goals and added an assist to finish with a career-high seven points.
Marasco contributed one goal and matched his career high with five assists. He also forced a turnover with less than a minute left that led to Maltzs winning goal.
SU, which had to overcome recent holes to beat Princeton and Cornell, erased a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to extend its home winning streak to six games.
I dont want to take anything away from Rutgers, SU coach John Desko said. I thought they played well and shot well.
We just didnt come in with that same intensity that we had two games ago, so to get out of here with a W was good, Desko added.
The Orange trailed nearly the entire game and faced a 10-5 deficit entering the fourth quarter before engineering a five-goal run in the span of 8 minutes, 40 seconds to tie the game.
An unassisted goal by Anthony Terranova restored a one-goal advantage for Rutgers before Maltz answered with 2:04 left to draw even at 11.
Marasco then ran the length of the field to chase down Rutgers Andrew Parrilla on a fast break with 30 seconds left, dove and knocked the ball out of the defenders stick. Orange senior defenseman Brian Megill gained possession and, after rushing into the offensive zone, he sent a pass to Maltz, who scored to complete the comeback.
I just saw their guy (Parrilla) was breaking, Marasco said of his caused turnover. I put my head down and tried to run as fast as I could. I figured I was going to dive. I just tried not to trip him, you know take a penalty, because then theyd have the ball with 30 seconds left.
I was able to get my stick on his stick, and Megill is one of the best at picking up ground balls, Marasco added. He realized the time, picked it up and he was able to run down the field and make a great pass to Maltz.
SU, which finished with a 43-27 edge in shots, outscored Rutgers, 7-1, in the final quarter, with Cometti scoring four goals and Maltz tallying three in the final 15 minutes.
Defensively, the Orange recorded a season-high 13 caused turnovers. Rutgers finished with 21 turnovers overall to 10 for SU.
Terranova scored four goals and assisted on another for Rutgers, and Scott Klimchak tallied three goals.
SU plays its last home game of the regular season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Hobart.
