RUSSELL - The Edwards-Knox Central School Board is scheduled to hold an emergency budget workshop tonight after discovering a mathematical budget error that will force the district to find $850,000 worth of spending cuts, according to School Superintendent Suzanne L. Kelly.
Ms. Kelly said in this years budget the district incorrectly recorded $581,000 in revenue that was supposed to be a budget reduction caused by the states gap elimination adjustment.
The error was discovered last week by Business Manager Rebecca Phillips.
Ms. Kelly said several school officials reviewed budget documents and did not notice the error.
There were many people who saw the same document and did not see the error. There were many layers, she said.
As a result, the school board will have to find ways to reduce a projected $850,000 shortfall.
The superintendent said job cuts will likely be considered because the district does not want to deplete the $3.4 million that remains in its reserved and unreserved fund balance.
The school board is scheduled to adopt the 2012-13 budget on April 22.
