HEUVELTON - It was a tough day to find a grove as a pitcher on Tuesday as Heuvelton entertained Harrisville in Northern Athletic Conference West Division Softball play.
With the cloudy and damp weather at just under 50 degrees, Heuvelton junior pitcher Logan Tallman overcame nine walks and three team errors pitching a five inning no-hitter over the Pirates in a 21-5 win.
Tallman fanned seven batters in the game where Harrisville scored once in the first and fifth and three in the third.
Heuvelton scored six in the first, nine in the fourth and sealed the win in a four-run fifth with two outs after Hannah Thornhill delivered a double plating her fifth and sixth runs of the game.
Todays weather wasnt a good day for any pitcher. But youve still have to play in it. Its tough after a long inning sitting on the bench in the cold and then pitching, said Heuvelton coach Josie Cole, a former standout Bulldog pitcher, who won her debut as Heuveltons varsity coach.
Hannah Thornhill went 3-5 with two doubles, six RBI and two runs scored for Heuvelton. Alexis Weidner went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs and two runs scored while Alexis Sawyer went 2-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Abby Williams connected for three hits (3-4) and two RBIs. Rachel Thornhill, Paige McCormick, and Miranda Donnelly all singled. Malbrie Baker scored twice for Harrisville. Losing pitcher Hannah Weaver, Ema Matott, and Georgie Baker also scored.
In other action, Melissa Foote earned her first varsity coaching win in a 14-13 win for Hermon-DeKalb over Morristown.
Hermond-DeKalb 14, Morristown 13: Morristown took a 13-11 lead in the top of the sixth inning scoring six runs sparked by three singles and a three run homerun by Margret Troiano.
But Hermon-DeKalb responded with three run bottom of the inning. Courtney Harrington plated two runs after reaching on an error. Jenifer Gotham later followed with a two out single scoring Harrington from third after a steal. Chelsey MacKay went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sabrina Wood added two hits and two runs scored while Brooke Woodrow scored three times and drove in a run. Jessica Geddes crushed a solo homerun and singled and drove in two runs and chipped in three runs scored for Morristown. Karissa Bertrand added two hits and two runs scored.
Liz Troiano added two singles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Courtney Harrington pitched the win outdueling Taylor Piercey of Morristown.
Colton-Pierrepont 12, Norwood-Norfolk 8: A five-run fifth inning carried the Colts to an opening day NAC East victory. Sabrina Johnson struck out four in a complete game win while Morgan Doyle, Andrea Aldous, Eve Whalen and Johnson all singled and drove in two runs. Mickey Frego belted two homeruns for N-N and Katie Ames, who went the distance the mound, tripled.
