CROGHAN- Ronald S. Thomas, 70, State Route 812, died Monday evening at his home while under the care of friends and Lewis County Hospice.
He was born on March 13, 1943 in Croghan to Merlin and Margaret Zehr Thomas. He graduated from Father Leo’s Catholic School in Croghan in 1961. He graduated from Central City Business Institute, Syracuse in 1963 where he studied office administration.
He worked for the Grand Union Grocery chain as a meat cutter. After the death of his father, he took over the operation of the Grand Union in Croghan from his mother and later changed the name to the Thomas Market. He sponsored Ronnie’s Rascals girl’s softball team for many years.
He enjoyed snow sledding, bowling, and especially liked playing golf. He loved to socialize and was always good for a laugh. He will be greatly missed by his golfing buddies and friends.
He is survived by two brothers, William, Florida and Merlin ”Joe”, Carthage. He is also survived by an aunt Venetha Houppert, Croghan, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by his parents, a brother James, and two sisters, Susan and Jane .
The family would like to thank his caregivers Yvonne Kirschner and Timothy Kloster.
