POTSDAM - Two Wilson Farms/Sugar Creek stores that were purchased by the 7-Eleven chain of convenience stores in 2011 have closed their doors.

The stores on Market Street in Potsdam and state Route 56 in Norwood were among the 188 stores in New York that were purchased by 7-Eleven two years ago.

Neither of the stores were among the five north country locations recently purchased by Stewart’s Shops.

Charles J. Marshall, who works as a real estate developer for Stewart’s said the chain purchased Wilson Farm’s/Sugar Creek’s second Potsdam location on Maple Street, as well as stores in Heuvelton, Watertown, Lake Placid and Keeseville.

Mr. Marshall said Stewart’s isn’t planning to close any of the stores and is actually planning additions for both of the St. Lawrence County locations. He said they’ll be going before the Potsdam Planning Board on May 2.

The addition, he said will allow the store to have a walk-in cooler and freezer. A smaller addition is also being planned for the store in Heuvelton, but Mr. Marshall said customers at that store will likely notice little, if any difference.

Things that have changed, though, include merchandise offerings.

“The first week we let the transition happen,” he said.

Then they began rolling out small changes like offering Stewart’s brand products and ice cream, including the make your own sundae bar that Stewart’s is known for.

Officials with Wilson Farms deferred comment to 7-Eleven, who did not return a telephone message left Friday afternoon.

A third Wilson Farms/Sugar Creek store in Gouverneur that was not purchased by Stewart’s is remaining open, although an employee who answered the phone there Friday afternoon said the store would be closing on April 18 for a transitional period before reopening under new ownership.
