CLAYTON — Quick response by a neighbor and firefighters Sunday afternoon helped limit the damage of a fire at a house on Jane Street in the village.

The fire broke out on the back porch at 403 Jane St. and caused minimal damage to the exterior and interior of the single-family house, according to Justin A. Taylor, the town supervisor and a member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department.

No one was injured and the house remains habitable, Mr. Taylor said. The cause was under investigation.

The fire was reported at 4:54 p.m., and crews arrived a few minutes later. In addition to firefighters, at least one neighbor responded with a fire extinguisher, Mr. Taylor said.

Firefighters minimized damage by attacking the fire through the front door and moving toward the back of the house, Mr. Taylor said.

The house is owned by Heather Bearman, who was home at the time.

Clayton Fire Chief Christopher J. Barton said he thought the fire would be worse when he first heard the call.

“When I saw the smoke going down the street, I was like, ‘Oh, man,’” Mr. Barton said. “The boys did a great job.”

The fire might have been the last for Mr. Barton as head of his department. His four-year term ends tonight.

The Clayton Police Department, the Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service and the Depauville and LaFargeville volunteer fire departments also responded.
