Police union, city agree on contract

OGDENSBURG — The union representing the Ogdensburg Police Department’s two lieutenants and five sergeants has reached a two-year contract agreement with the city.

The 2012-13 contract for the Police Supervisory Unit, approved Monday by the City Council, ensures that new sergeants are paid a percentage above the highest-paid patrolman’s base pay.

For 2012, the retroactive increase will be 7 percent. That, according to City Comptroller Philip A. Cosmo, amounts to a raise to $56,170 from the base of $52,495.

For this year, the increase is 8 percent, or $58,254 from a base of $53,939.

Before 2012, City Manager John M. Pinkerton said Thursday, the percentage increase was 6.7 percent, but a subsequent 2.75-percent raise for the patrol officers negotiated by the Police Benevolent Association union narrowed the salary gap between uniformed officers and their supervisors.

Mr. Pinkerton said he is confident the new percentages will encourage promotions.

The union is pleased with the contract.

“We’re very happy with the agreement,” said Lt. Harry J. McCarthy, union president.

The contract is expected to be signed today.

Also in the agreement:

n Vacation time for newly promoted Police Supervisory Unit members after Jan. 1 is: 10 days after one year, 15 days after five years and 20 days after 15 years.

n The city will pay 100 percent of health insurance costs for retired members hired by the department before Jan. 1, 2009, as well as for dependents of those who retire after Jan. 1, 2012.

The city reached its contract deal with the union representing police officers in December.
