LOWVILLE A jury has been seated in a Lewis County rape trial three months after officials were unable to do so in the initial go-round.
Twelve jurors and two alternates were selected on Monday and Tuesday in the Lewis County Court case of Kurt J. Hazzard, 41, of 6835 Mechanic St., Croghan, which includes three counts of first-degree rape, two counts of third-degree rape, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and single counts of second-degree rape and a first- and third-degree criminal sex act.
Hazzard was arrested in early January 2012 on accusations he had sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 17 by forcible compulsion on occasions in August, November and December 2011, all in the town of Croghan, and sexual contact with another underage girl on one occasion.
The trial is to proceed today with opening statements.
In December, a mistrial was declared after officials were able to seat only eight jurors.
