Alexandria Bay- Rudolf Rudy H. Gipperich, 75, Dingman Point Rd., Alexandria Bay, NY died Friday evening at Samaritan Keep Home.
Rudy was born January 20, 1938 in Essen, Germany, the son of Rudi and Agnes Rath Gipperich. He came to the United States in 1969 and became a U.S. citizen in 1987. His education in Germany included Licenses in Fine Woodworking and Home Building and an Architectural Bachelors Degree. He received his Vocational Education Teaching Degree from SUNY Oswego. Over a twenty year period, he was an Architect for three Watertown firms: Sargent, Webster, Crenshaw & Folley; Parker & Soper; and Bernier & Carr. He was instrumental in the design of the Indian River Central School expansion in 1985. In 1987 Rudy began teaching Graphic Arts and Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (C.A.D.D.) at the Watertown Vocation School (BOCES). After two years, he began teaching CADD exclusively due to the popularity and increased enrollment of that class. He loved teaching and took great pride in his students successes. He retired in 2007 after twenty years at BOCES.
Rudy has two children from his first marriage. He married Donna Zotos Brandt on April 6, 1986 in Park Ridge, NJ.
As a young man in Germany, Rudy played semi-professional soccer. He was an avid runner who began running full Marathons at age 60, always placing in the top 3 of his age group. He loved nature and enjoyed cross-country skiing. His community service activities included being a director for both the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Thousand Islands Craft School in Clayton, a volunteer at the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, and founder/chairperson for the Alexandria Bay Garden Club.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, Alexandria Bay; his son, Torsten (Abigail) Gipperich, New Orleans, LA; his daughter, Colette Amici, Norfolk, VA; his step-son, Richard (Andrea) Brandt, Santa Rosa, CA; his step-daughter, Rebecca (Alexander) Basini, West Islip, NY; his brother, Wolfgang (Edith) Gipperich, Germany; nine grandchildren; one niece and several cousins in Germany.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 am at the Church of Christ, Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY. A reception will follow at the Basini home in West Islip. A local memorial service will be held in early July at the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles, Alexandria Bay. There will be no calling hours.
