OGDENSBURG The Maple City earned its moniker with a lush and vibrant urban forest, and now city officials are seeking grant money to maintain and replenish trees on public property.
Ogdensburg will seek up to $191,000 from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a federal task force, to plant trees throughout city parks and along streets and replace diseased or damaged trees.
Andrea L. Smith, city planner, said the application follows up on a tree survey conducted by natural resources consultant Forecon in Falconer, near Jamestown.
In January, the company delivered a report suggesting Ogdensburg diversify its tree stock 49 percent of the citys trees are maples.
The company recommended no more than 30 percent of the citys trees come from one family.
