Gun show operators in Clayton and Potsdam have agreed to implement new safety standards called for by state Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.
The Clayton Rotary Club and West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Company Inc. joined 21 other operators statewide in agreeing to follow Model Gun Show Procedures developed by Mr. Schneidermans office.
The rules ensure, among other things, that all guns brought into a gun show by private sellers are tagged so that, upon exiting, the operator can determine whether guns were sold and that a proper background check was performed.
The 23 operators included in the agreement oversee more than 50 scheduled shows and gun auctions in the state, which represents more than 80 percent of shows in the state.
