Area boys hockey teams competing for state Tier II, Tier III honors in Amherst this weekend

After producing four New York State Amateur Hockey Assocaition champions last weekend, the Northern Zone will be sending another six teams to three state tournaments in Amherst this weekend.

The majority of the area teams pursuing top honors will be competing at the Tier III 16U boys championships led by sectional champion Louisville. Runner-up Tri-Town, third-place Norfolk-Norwood and fourth-place North Franklin will all be part of the state tournament field as well. Louisville and North Franklin will be in the same round robin division along with the Valley Eagles and the Palisades Predators while Tri-Town and Norfolk-Norwood will be skating in the same preliminary round division along with Genesee Batavia and the Great Neck Bruins.

The St. Lawrence Thunder Midget Boys are heading to Amherst looking to notch a third straight Tier II 16U title after defending the state championship last winter at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena while the Louisville Lightning will also be fielding a team at the Tier III 18U tournament.

TIER III 16U BOYS

Action gets underway at 6 a.m. at the Tier III 16U championships in Amherst with Norfolk-Norwood facing Genesee-Batavia and North Franklin squaring off against Louisville. Tri-Town will open against Great Neck starting at 6:15 a.m.

All four Northern Zone teams return to the ice later on Friday with Tri-Town taking on Genesee-Batavia at 3:10 p.m., Louisville going up agianst Palisades at 3:10 p.m., Norfolk-Norwood matching up against Great Neck at 3:25 p.m. and North Franklin facing off against the Valley Eagles at 3:25 p.m.

In their only games on Saturday, Louisville takes on the Valley Eagle at 9:40 a.m. while Norfolk-Norwood and Tri-Town faces each other at 9:40 a.m. and North Franklin goes up against Palisades at 9:55 a.m.

The semi-finals are slated for Sunday at 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. and the championship game at 2 p.m.

John Beattie is head coach of the Louisville Lightning. Jamie Sutton is head coach for Tri-Town, Tim Brown and Greg Munson coach the Norfolk-Norwood Icemen and Mike Sisto is head coach of the North Franklin squad.

THUNDER 16U AT TIER II TOURNEY

Coached by Josh Bartell along with assistants John Hart and Greg Paquin, the St. Lawrence Thunder are slated to open their 16U Tier II title defense this morning at 7:50 a.m. against the Cheektowaga Warriors. They play their second round-robin game this evening at 5 p.m. against the Long Island Edge before wrapping up the first round Saturday morning at 11:30 p.m. against the Syracuse Warriors.

The other four teams competing for the Tier II title this weekend are the Clarence Mustangs, the Nassau County Lions, the Plattsburgh Roadrunners and the Long Island Rebels.

The top two teams advance to the semi-finals on Sunday at 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. while the championship game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

LOUISVILLE AT 18U TIER III TOURNAMENT

The Louisville Lightning 18U team will open the Tier III tournament in Amherst today at 11:30 a.m. against the NY Skyliners. They played their other two round-robin games on Saturday against Bear Mountain at 6 a.m. and against the Valley Eagles at 3:10 p.m.

Competing in the other preliminary round division are Jamestown, the Fulton Raiders, the Great Neck Bruins and the Geneva Generals.

The tournament semi-finals are Sunday at 11:20 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. with the championship game slated for 6:20 p.m.
