CAPE VINCENT — Town Supervisor Urban C. Hirschey will not run for re-election in November but plans to remain engaged in the community’s development.

Mr. Hirschey said that much has been accomplished since he was elected to office in November 2009 but that he wishes to step back and spend more time with his family and perhaps travel a bit more.

Not only did Cape Vincent pass a revised comprehensive plan and zoning law — which introduced tough restrictions on wind energy development, among other things — but it saw the historic Roxy Hotel on Broadway rehabilitated with state funds and welcomed aluminum boat manufacturer MetalCraft Marine into the community.

”I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Mr. Hirschey said, “and I wouldn’t mind being on board with the new development committee. Cape Vincent has potential, and I’d like to help get it realized in a positive way.”

The town and village of Cape Vincent are forming a joint development committee that would fill the void of the Cape Vincent Local Development Corp., which is to dissolve soon.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Mr. Hirschey, as he met with resistance from wind farm advocates because of his past association with an anti-wind group.

Midway through his first term, he was asked to resign by pro-wind councilmen — who eventually were voted out of office — and residents for allegedly leaking “confidential” town documents to the Wind Power Ethics Group, which he had cofounded.

Mr. Hirschey, however, was soon let off the hook after the state attorney general’s office denied the town board’s request for an investigation.

Councilmen Brooks J. Bragdon and Clifford P. Schneider will square off in the Republican primary for a shot to succeed Mr. Hirschey.

When asked who he’d be supporting, Mr. Hirschey said he is “going to support the winner.”

So far, nobody else has announced publicly a candidacy.
