CANTON – David Little, director and curator of photography and new media at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, will give a talk at St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. Monday in the Griffiths Arts Center, Room 123. The event is free and open to the public.

Little will address the history and role of photography and digital media in elevating sports from pastime to international spectacle, and sports’ potential to speak to broader themes of race, class, gender, politics and power.

In 2012, he organized “The Sports Show” at the MIA, a major exhibition of photographs examining athletics as image and spectacle. His essay, “How Sports Became ‘The Sports Show’: From the Beginnings of Photography to the Digital Age,” appears in the exhibition catalog.

A hockey arena-themed reception with hot dogs, popcorn and nachos will follow the lecture.

Little’s talk is in conjunction with the current exhibition in the Richard Brush Art Gallery, “Game On! Art and Hockey,” curated by Associate Professor of Fine Arts Kasarian Dane. The exhibition is open through Tuesday.
