LOWVILLE — Lack of official notice will delay a proposed change to Lewis County’s all-terrain vehicle permit system.

While county lawmakers last week set a public hearing for 5 p.m. Tuesday on a proposed law changing the ATV permit fee to $65 and eliminating any club member discount, a required legal notice of it was inadvertently never published.

As a result, lawmakers will need to set another public hearing Tuesday, likely at a special meeting in mid-March, said Board of Legislators Chairman Michael A. Tabolt, R-Croghan.

Permits now cost $40 for an ATV owned by a member of a club in the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association and $80 for a machine owned by a nonmember, and some club officials have expressed concern the switch would remove an incentive for riders to join clubs.

Public hearings on proposed laws opening 4.8 miles of Byrons Corners, Highmarket and Mackay roads’ segments to ATV traffic will proceed as scheduled Tuesday.
