LOWVILLE The Lewis County Historical Society, 7552 S. State St., will present a program on the womens suffrage movement at 2 p.m. March 10.
After a video outlining the larger movement up to the 19th Amendment in 1920, historian Charlotte Beagle will discuss county groups that worked to get women the right to vote.
At one time, every village in the county had a suffragist club, and several well-known suffragists visited the county, including Susan B. Anthony. In spite of all this activity, the former town of Highmarket was the only one in the county to support equal suffrage in 1915, and that was by only two votes.
The program is free.
