I read with great interest the recent letter from Claudia Smith regarding hydrofracking.
Like Claudia Smith, I, too, watched the program on Canadian TV regarding hydrofracking. I, too, am horrified by the side-effects of the process. The irreversible side-effects. The life-threatening, horrific side-effects.
Family after family has had to pack up and move because their health has been so impacted. If you rent, that is reasonably easy to do. If you own, it is harder. Who is going to buy a house in such an area? If you are a landowner who has received millions of dollars for leasing your land, it is also easy to pack up and move.
A man on the program showed his drinking water I should say undrinkable water. The gas company is providing bottled water for the family. However, they cant provide bottled water for showers, gardening, etc. He said his daughter lies on the floor and cries each time she takes a shower. She is covered with a rash. She also has other health problems.
The air is toxic, the water is toxic, etc. Dont think that because we live in Northern New York we are immune to the problems. According to the map they showed on the program, the entire state of New York is a potential area for drilling.
Our food supply will be contaminated nationwide. We wont be able to let our pets go outside. Farm animals will be contaminated. I read recently that cows in South Dakota are losing their tails they are falling off. Their legs are swollen. They are losing their calves. And they are dying.
The gas is not even being used in this country it is being shipped to China! Why should we allow our health to be compromised for this?
I do not understand why the Watertown Daily Times keeps pushing for this dangerous procedure to be allowed. Do you have no concern for public health and welfare? When we cannot go outside because the air is toxic, when we have no potable water, the few jobs that may be created mean nothing. Someday they may find a way to extract the gas safely. Lets wait until then, rather than endangering our environment and health to ship gas to other countries.
