WADDINGTON - Anglers will descend upon Waddington this weekend for the annual St. Lawrence River Walleye Association’s annual Northern Pike Challenge.

Last year’s tournament included 849 participants and this year Association President Michael Gagner said they’re hoping for 1,000.

“The last two years in a row we have had the worst storm of the year that day and I think it had deterred some people south of us from making the trip up,” he said. “This year, this is the best ice we’ve had in a long time. We should have a good turnout.”

Registration for the tournament will begin at 3 a.m. at the Louisville Fire Hall on state Route 37 and continue until 7 a.m. when the tournament begins. Tournament sites include Coles Creek, Brandy Brook, Fobare’s Pond and Wilson Hill.

While many tournaments assign anglers a location or hold lotteries to determine fishing sites, Mr. Gagner said participants in the Northern Pike Challenge can fish at any of the sites they choose. Registration for those fishing in the adult division is $35, with a special price of $10 available for youth division entrants 15 and under.

“All youths will receive a prize upon registration,” he said, adding the youth division also features 100 percent payback.

Adult entrants will be taking their shot at nearly $20,000 in cash and prizes with $1,000 awarded each hour for the top three fish during that hour. A $100 cash prize will also be awarded to the angler catching the largest walleye of the day and the largest pike of the day. Mountings for those fish have been donated by Three Rivers Taxidermy and Nature’s Trophies.

On top of all of that the tournament will also include nearly $15,000 in door prizes, with two cash prizes of $2,500 and a wacky hat contest among the offerings.

“Anyone, except for youth entrants has a chance at those if they catch any fish or not,” Mr. Gagner said.

Door prizes, as well as the tournaments other prizes will be awarded at Sandy Beach at 4 p.m.

Other sponsors for the tournament include Budweiser, Subway and FISHCAP.
