CARTHAGE — If you’re a quilter in the area and in need of supplies, you may need to look no further.

A fabric store is opening Friday on State Street.

Jeanette A. Turner plans to have a soft opening of Sew What at 325 State St. this week and then have a grand opening sometime next month.

Mrs. Turner said she “grew up sewing” and started quilting about six years ago.

“I always wanted to open my own business and enjoy creating something beautiful,” the new business owner said. “I like to make things and do community service projects.”

She said she has combined those two interests to create comfort quilts for juvenile cancer patients at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Pa., where a friend has been a patient.

Mrs. Turner said the shop’s name came from her husband, Carthage Central School District Superintendent Peter J. Turner. She said that over the years as she went off to sew or attend sewing activities, he would tease her by saying, “Sew what?”

The shop, in the former Tammy’s Salon location, will sell fabric, batting and sewing implements. In addition, she will do custom embroidery and quilt finishing using a long-arm quilting machine and will make custom-order quilts. Mrs. Turner hopes to add yarn, hand embroidery material and local handmade gift items to the store’s inventory and to host quilting classes.

Starting Friday, the store will be open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about Sew What, call 519-7459.
