Remington Museum director search committee sets deadlines for applicants

The Frederic Remington Art Museum has set three consecutive first-of-the-month deadlines in its recruitment of a new executive director.

Recently posted advertising for the position states that applications will be accepted until April 1, a hiring recommendation will made by May 1 and a new executive director will be in place by June 1.

Edward A. LaVarnway, the museum’s executive director since 2005, wants to leave by June 1.

He has agreed to stay until his replacement signs on and is familiar with the job. Trustee and search committee chairwoman Julie H. Cliff has already said that she’s confident a successor will be hired in plenty of time for him to leave as planned.

The recruitment ad sets the annual salary range at $46,000 to $50,000 with qualifications and experience the factors in determining how much will be offered.

The job description calls for an executive director who has experience in management, planning and grant-writing. Also, according to the ad, the chosen candidate will have a “thorough knowledge of the fundraising and fiscal management principles and practices governing the administration of an art museum.”

Mrs. Cliff said Tuesday that the search committee will interview as many candidates as it deems qualified and experienced.

“There is no number,” she said when asked whether there would be a limit on how many applicants would be interviewed.

But there will be a cutoff, Mrs. Cliff said, on the number of finalists.

“I think the goal is to have three candidates,” she said.

The committee is consulting a museum organization, the Washington, D.C.-based Museum Trustee Association, for advice in the recruitment process.

The other search committee members besides Mrs. Cliff are museum Curator Laura A. Foster, board President William J. Cavanaugh, Vice President Kathleen R. Wade, Secretary Dianne Drayse Alonzo, International Advisory Board member and museum benefactor Alan P. Newell and trustees Catherine B. Newell and Scott M. Wright.

The museum is located at 303 Washington St.
