FORT COVINGTON — Fort Covington Town Supervisor Pat Manchester told the town council Monday that the state Department of Environmental Conservation has granted a variance allowing them to test well water in the vicinity of the former town landfill only once per year. Prior to the variance, water testing had been taking place biannually.

The board will contract with Tisdale Associates to test the water for $1,000 per round, which is a savings of $800 over the former rate for twice a year.

The landfill, located on County Route 3, has been closed since the early 1990s and capped since about 2000.

The town spent $4,100 on landfill-related expenses in 2012 and has $2,500 budgeted for 2013.

The town of Westville requested a variance to allow them to test wells surrounding its old landfill on Flat Rock Road less frequently but were denied by DEC.
