MASSENA — Model airplanes, helicopters and even a few boats will be on display Saturday at St. Lawrence Centre, when the Seaway Valley Modelaires hosts its annual model airplane show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Club President Dale J. Beaulieu said the event is something the club holds each year to help generate new interest in the hobby.

“I would love to get more kids involved in the sport,” he said, adding it was one of his own grandchildren that reinvigorated his interest a few years ago.

“I’ve been flying model airplanes since I was 14 and I’m 54 now,” he said, although he took a 30-year break from the sport after getting married in the ’80s.

“I took my grandson to the flying field three years ago and he expressed an interest in it,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I got back into it.”

Mr. Beaulieu said the show will include between 10 and 12 members with between 25 and 30 models on display.

“We’ll have everything from microplanes to quarter-scale planes,” he said. “There will be a great display of helicopters and maybe even some boats.”

For the most part, though, Mr. Beaulieu said, the models will remain grounded.

“It’s basically a static display to teach people about radio control airplanes and modeling,” he said. “We want to let people know who we are, what we do and maybe generate some interest amongst some younger people and children.”

Mr. Beaulieu said membership in the St. Lawrence Valley Modelaires costs $25 per year, although members also are required to belong to the national Academy of Model Aeronautics, which has its own membership fees listed on its website.

The group holds several events each year, including “two fun flies” with other model plane clubs in the area.

“We have members that are 8 years old all the way up to 80,” he said. “We’re all a bunch of kids.”
