POTSDAM — Mrs. Betty M. Nelson, age 89 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Friday, February 15th at the Massena Memorial Hospital. She was currently a resident at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena. There will be a graveside service in the spring at the Garfield Cemetery. Online condolences can be made @www.garnerfh.com. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service in Potsdam.

Betty is survived by a son Donald “Tuffy” Nelson and his companion Cheryl Brunet; a brother Wallace LaPointe; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Donald Nelson Sr.; a daughter Melissa McKay and a brother Welby LaPointe.

Mrs. Betty M. Nelson was born on April 20, 1923 in Potsdam, NY to the late Wallace and Jenny Files LaPointe. She was a 1941 graduate of Potsdam Central High School. On January 24, 1942 she was married to Donald Nelson in the Rectory at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Tierney celebrant.

Mrs. Nelson worked for the rationing board during WWII. She then worked for Carey’s Jewelry Store, Sullivan’s Shoe Store, Montgomery Wards and was also a homemaker.
