GOUVERNEUR — St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies on Monday arrested a Gouverneur woman for alleged welfare fraud nearly four years ago.

Brenda L. Miller, 42, of 48 William St., Apt. C, was charged with third-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, said Edward F. Tischler, an investigator with the St. Lawrence County district attorney’s office.

Mrs. Miller submitted an application for food stamps containing false information, Mr. Tischler said. As a result, between April 2 and Sept. 30, 2009, she received nearly $4,700 in benefits to which she was not entitled, he said.

Mrs. Miller was arraigned in Fowler Town Court and committed to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $2,500 bail.

In August 2009, she was charged with petit larceny and endangering the welfare of a child at the town of Potsdam Walmart store on Route 11. She was convicted of petit larceny and was sentenced in December 2009 to a conditional discharge, with a $205 court surcharge.
