HAMMOND — The town hopes to lower energy costs through improvements to its town barn.

Supervisor Ronald W. Bertram and Highway Superintendent Donald H. Greene have met with a representative from Bernier, Carr & Associates, Watertown, to discuss several improvement projects geared toward increasing energy efficiency.

The town will begin by updating its heating and septic systems and insulation. Crews already insulated the building’s top, reinstalled exhaust vents and installed new front and back doors last month.

Mr. Greene said the town plans to construct a new kitchenette area for the crew and turn the smaller former kitchenette into much-needed storage space. He said extending the highway building’s front by about 20 feet will create more space.

“We’re quite confined with our trucks and snowplows,” Mr. Greene said.

The town plans to pay for the project with a mixture of state and local grants and town money. Approximately $20,000 of this year’s budget has been set aside for improvement projects, Mr. Bertram said.

The town is working with Hammond Central School to install a fuel pumping station for the village, town, school bus garage and Hammond Volunteer Fire Department.
