The state Department of Environmental Conservation reported last week that New York had the lowest number of hunting-related shooting incidents on record in 2012.

According to the department, the 2012 season included 24 personal incidents, with just more than half being self-inflicted. There were no hunting-related shooting incidents reported during the first youth hunt for deer that took place Columbus Day weekend.

The release noted that though overall hunting levels have declined 20 percent since the 1960s, the hunting incident rate has fallen more than 70 percent. The department reported the past five-year average is 5.3 incidents per 100,000 hunters, compared with 19 per 100,000 in the 1960s.
