POTSDAM — The state Department of Environmental Conservation has determined the town of Potsdam is not responsible for oil-contaminated soil found in the Town Court’s basement at 35 Market St.

Contamination was found during the building’s rehabilitation and cost the town more than $50,000 to clean.

The town will likely apply for money to help cover the cleanup’s cost and expects to be eligible for several thousand dollars.

DEC has not closed the case. It will continue to search for what caused the spill, which is believed to have occurred in the 1970s, and seek damages from whomever is responsible if possible.
