After having his car struck by a hit-and-run driver Saturday night at Public Square and State Street, a motorist followed the other auto to Black River and took a photo of the vehicle license plate, according to Watertown police.
A trace on a South Carolina plate enabled police on Wednesday to charge Demetrius A. McClain, 23, Fort Drum, with leaving the scene of an accident and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. He is ordered to appear in City Court.
Police said a car driven by Jason L. Ginger, 415 Dimmick St., was struck in the rear about 10 p.m. Saturday. The photo he took while following the hit-and-run Dodge was not clear, but enabled an officer to run a series of plate numbers, ultimately pointing to Mr. McClains car, police said. When confronted about the accident, Mr. McClain admitted being the hit-and-run driver, police said. His car skidded on slippery pavement, causing the accident, he told an officer.
Fort Drum authorities assisted in the investigation.
