ADAMS Citing costs and limited staffing, the South Jeff Chamber of Commerce will close its office in the village at the end of the month.
Chamber President Connie A. Elliott said the approximately $500 a month that it costs the chamber to rent and maintain its space at 14 E. Church St. could be better spent on holding more events for members.
We just feel like we can offer a lot more to our members by not having such big overhead, Ms. Elliott said. Its just much more cost effective.
The decision was made by the chambers board of directors at its meeting in January.
Ms. Elliott said that although the office was staffed by volunteers in the past, the organization since last summer has had few people volunteering to stay at the office, and limited foot traffic.
Its tough to get people to dedicate the day to getting to the office, she said.
She added that there could be stretches of two to three weeks in which nobody stopped in or worked out of the office.
Nobody really came there, Ms. Elliott said. Anybody who wanted anything would email or call you.
Following the closure, Ms. Elliott said, office work will be completed by her at home, which she already is doing. She also said that in the past month, the chamber has figured out other places to store large items that were held at the East Church Street office.
Ms. Elliott said that the closure of the office does not mean the chamber is having any problems. The organization is doing wonderful, she said.
She pointed out that the chamber has several events planned in the area for the rest of the year.
