PLESSIS Robert G. Cheesman, 72, who was pulled from his burning trailer home Saturday night, died at River Hospital, Alexandria Bay, state police said Sunday.
Plessis volunteer firefighters responded to the fire at 44014 County Route 2 about 6:30 p.m. and rescued Mr. Cheesman, who was home alone at the time, according to Joseph D. Plummer, Jefferson County director of fire and emergency management. The fire severely damaged the single-wide trailer that he shared with his wife.
Police said the cause of the fire has not been determined but appears to have been accidental.
Frigid temperatures and the remote location made fighting the blaze difficult. Water had to be brought in by tanker trucks and the cold caused problems with freezing and firefighter fatigue, according to Mr. Plummer. Several agencies responded.
