A Georgia man is being held on $15,000 bail in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building after being extradited for his alleged purchase of a vehicle with a worthless check for down payment.

Christopher C. Wash, 33, Grovetown, Ga., is charged by state police with third-degree grand larceny. Pamelia Town Justice Robert H. Austin ordered the case held for grand jury action.

After state police received a complaint on Jan. 3, an arrest warrant was issued Jan. 20 by town of Watertown Justice David A. Renzi on allegations that Mr. Wash issued a $2,670 check on a closed account on Dec. 21 as down payment for a 2007 Chevy Tahoe from Widrick Auto Sales, Watertown Center. He also provided some false documentation, according to information provided to Watertown Town Court for the warrant.

When a Widrick salesman contacted Mr. Wash by telephone early in January, Mr. Wash claimed he was in North Carolina at the bedside of his dying mother, according to a document presented Thursday in Pamelia Town Court.

Mr. Wash was being held in Columbia County jail, Appling, Ga., until being taken into custody Thursday by New York State Police.
