The Ogdensburg City School District will put Sherman Elementary School on the market after it closes June 30.

At Monday’s Board of Education meeting, members unanimously voted to close the school one year ahead of schedule to save money, in hopes of offsetting reductions in state aid and cost increases.

The building will be appraised and marketed after it closes.

Previously the district planned on closing Sherman and Lincoln elementary schools in June 2014, following the completion of a building project at John F. Kennedy Elementary School to make room for those schools’ students.

But in the fall Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey said the district could save $100,000 by closing Sherman ahead of schedule.

At Monday’s meeting officials said the district stood to save roughly $150,000 in utility fees and salaries.

Sherman, which houses students from kindergarten to second grade, will send students to Lincoln and Kennedy in the fall.

Second-graders will move directly to Kennedy.

Kindergartners and first-graders from Sherman will be sent to Lincoln until it closes next year. After that, they will move to Kennedy.

The Sherman Elementary School building was originally built in 1895 and housed students up to sixth grade.

Following a fire in 1951, the school dropped sixth grade, and later was converted to house students only up to second grade.

The building is in good shape, Mr. Vernsey said.

“It’s got new roofs; we’ve done masonry work,” Mr. Vernsey said.

Mr. Vernsey said the Board of Education has the responsibility to sell the building, but any potential revenue has not been figured into the district’s 2013-2014 budget.

An asking price remains to be seen, Mr. Vernsey said.

“If there’s no interest over a period of time that would probably drive down the value of the building,” he said.
